What to expect during an Online Tournament

Follow these simple steps to participate in an NSC Online event:

  1. Join the Zoom meeting (where applicable)
  2. Sign into Lichess Open up a browser window and sign into your Lichess account start time of round 1. Here is the link to Lichess sign in
  3. Open the NSC Tournament Home Page Open the tournament home page in another tab or window of browser where you signed into Lichess. This is where you will find everything you need for the tournament day.

Joining the Zoom meeting

  • For some event, a Zoom meeting is available at the start of the event.
  • The purpose of this meeting room is for any initial announcements, and for support if anyone is having trouble finding their games.
  • The meeting is for registered players of the event. The Zoom link is publicly available and also advertised in the Announcements section of the Tournament Home Page of the event. Anyone joining the meeting is vetted for entry in a waiting room.

Sign into Lichess

  • You need to use the same browser to sign into Lichess and open the Tournament Home Page (step 3).
  • If you are on a mobile device, use a browser instead of the Lichess app to sign in. Otherwise when you click game links on the NSC Tournament Home Page to play your game, Lichess won't know about your sign in session in the Lichess app because it's not within the browser.

Open the NSC Tournament Home Page

  • Each NSC Online tournament has it's own tournament home page. The link to the correct home page can be found on the website for the event, or provided as part of the registration process.
  • From 15 mintes before the start time until half an hour after the finish time, the page auto-refreshes every 2 minutes for any new announcements, result updates, or new round pairing. You can also manually refresh it anytime.
  • Pairings for each round are published on the tournament home page. You can play your game by clicking on the lichess game link next to the pair where you are a player. As long as you are signed in to Lichess in the same browser, you will be able to play the game.
  • If you click on a game link where you are not one of the players, you can watch the game as it happens (live games) or go through the moves of a finished game.
  • If the Tournament Home Page detects a new round pairing, it can play a sound notification. This can be disabled by clicking the "SPEAKER" icon in the header section (top right). Please note: this feature does not work with Safari. We recommend Chrome receiving sound notification is important for you.
  • Any announcements for the tournament will appear on this page. New announcements less than 10 minutes old will appear in purple.
  • If a player has any issues during the tournament and needs to contact the organiser, they can get in touch using the "SEND" icon in the header section (top left of page)
